Fell down that too large a carb trap years ago.
Being young and dumb, I replaced a very leaky 4GC with a Holley 600 double pumper. I'd mash it flat and eventually the engine would catch up to the carb.
It didn't take long for me to get a fresh rebuilt 4GC
