I agree about safety. My main modifications would be power steering, power disc brakes, shoulder harness seatbelts, and probably the gas tank relocation. I also thought about some sort of headrests. PopularMechanics.com had a feature about the least safe interior features. One of them was a bench seat with glass directly behind it. Apparently during that time, many people in pickup truck wrecks slammed their head through the back glass due to a lack of headrests. This is a lovely conversation, isn't it?

As for thing about a T-bone killing me such that I wouldn't have to worry about a cab fire. That would seem like a poor solution for my wife or daughter sitting in the passenger seat.
