I've always made it a practice to assemble electrical connections clean, tight, and DRY, then coat them with anti-corrosive compounds or paint if necessary. Nothing beats a solid metal-to-metal connection, with nothing whatsoever between the conductors. Isolating the outside of the connection from corrosive influence is great, but don't put anything between the pieces that carry the current.
