Hy Ted W, if your starter has a black tag then it is a six volt one, using twelve volts to activate a six volt solenoid may damage it, causing it not to function correctly. Do you have a manual for your truck? If your starter has an exposed link on the solenoid there is an adjustment procedure to make sure it is engaging the flywheel correctly.If it was my stuff I would try to find a twelve volt solenoid for the starter.
