3B, thanks for the info. My starter does have the exposed link, and I did the adjustment again today. That helped the noise that sounded like the pinion gear wasn't completely free of the flywheel. Still having problems with it not always engaging properly. It clicks and sounds as if it is trying to turn slow. If I hit the ignition switch a few times it eventually engages and starts as it should. I checked and my starter is a 12 volt as is my solenoid.
