Hook it up to # 1 spark plug & the battery, (12 volts). Disconnect the tube to the vacuum advance. Start the engine & at idle speed shine the light on the opening in the bell hous. above thw starter. Look for a steel ball or a circle with a couple of lines. If you can,t see it you will have to take the cover off the flywheel & find it or turn thre engine till you see it in the opining. Put a dab of white paint on it when you find it. Start the engine & if the mark shows up you can adjust the timing by loosening the bolt holding it in & turning it. If that is not enough movement loosen the slotted screw under the dist. housing. Turn it counterclockwise to advance the timing. Set it a few degrees advanced from where the marks line up.
