That's exactly how my '50 is too,it didn't have the mirror although the hole was there and AFAIK mine was original and unmolested.
I actually ordered the separate bracket in error,only to find the mirror screws directly into the bar.

Denny... unless the PO removed a blanking piece,I think it was just left open.
I suppose you could fit a small grommet if it bothers you.
