Davey, as long as you've got the drag link disconnected from the Pitman arm, there's really no need to remove the Pitman arm from the steering gear. Disconnecting the linkage anywhere just eliminates the drag that the linkage puts on the steering gear while you're checking the sector preload. It's a lot easier to feel the high point when you're not moving tie rods, spindles, etc.
