I had a gas tank with a leaky neck weld repaired about 8 years ago. Took it to a local radiator shop and they cleaned it and repaired it for about 30 bucks.

For the last few years I worked at a welding / fab shop that built large pressure vessels for oil field equipment. They did repairs all the time on oil and gas equipment. The vessels were steam cleaned internally and then an electronic "sniffer" is used to ensure there are no gas fumes remaining.

It can be done... Might want to check around?

Good luck!
