Now you want to really cornfuse the issue, look at this illustration for the '55-'57 and they show a lock washer in line with the spring in the exploded view.

I think the engineers took a break and turned the illustrations over to the technical writers. I had a friend once that was a technical writer and he couldn't screw in a light bulb, but he could tell you how to do it.
