I've seen industrial applications that use both bypass and in-line (full-flow) filters, to take advantage of the filtering characteristics that Jerry describes. The by-pass filter that catches particles as small as 2/10 micron would be catching particles measuring 0.000008", as one micron is 1/000 of a millimeter. Ten microns would be about 0.0004".
