In 1951 I had a '39 Chevrolet 4 door sedan that I put a GMC 270 engine in. Howard 5 carb. manifold with 5 97's, home made tube headers, lots of port work, big valves and a Harman Collins cam. This was unbeaten by any flathead Ford in 3 years of street and strip racing, and was a pussy cat to drive, full throttle at less that 3000 RPM caused a bog down, but above 3000 it came on like gang busters. Never say never about any set up, there are some of us that can make them work, and work good. At the Santa Ana drag strip It ran 98 MPH before e.t. clocks were used. With gas at less than $.20 per gallon economy was not a consideration, but it used quite a bit.
