You will probably find that most of the replacement cables have a plastic tip. It should work fine as long as the spedometer is working properly. If the spedometer is binding up it will brake the tip off of the cable. Usually you have to remove the spedo and dissassemble it to clean and lube it properly. You could try a little WD40 on the gears and maybe get lucky.
