What do you mean by slop in the mechanism? Mine does exactly the same thing. What would I look for to find the slop?

The arm that pushes the button has a fork on the end inside the starter. The fork ends have pegs that ride in a groove on the bendix. These pegs and the groove get worn. This could cause the start button to engage before the gear teeth are meshed.
