Many times a bad condensor can give those problems. I've seen new ones bad out of the box many times. Put the old one back in or try another new one.

Take off the distributor cap and with the ignition on, open and close the points with an insulated screwdriver. The spark should be sharp and crisp. If it "flashes" big and blue, it is most likely the condensor.
