When I was telling my machinist how proud I was after pulling my crankshaft timing gear, he told me that I had done it the hard way. He said the way to do it is to give it some sharp raps with a chisel, between the teeth right over the keyway. Apparently those gears are so hard that they can be cracked quite easily. Apparently that location causes maximum stress on the gear.
