Bob,
I pulled the gear from the fron of my 1942 216 motor so I could get the camshaft out. After breaking my old gear puller, I gently heated the gear - trying to keep the heat to the gear and not the shaft.
Some taps with a punch to allow the liberally applied penatrating oil to soak in eventually yielded a seperate gear and shaft. Also try applying and releasing teh pressure from the gear puller a few times - this seemed very effective.
The gear on the end of the cam does need to be pressed off. Good luck.
