here is the procedure for adjusting the valves, as outlined in the Techtips:

Now, #1 and #6 pistons are always at the same position in the stroke. With the motor at TDC either #1 will be ready to fire with #6 on intake, or vice versa. This is where your rotor needs to be pointing at the proper plug wire. The distributor turns around once for every two revolutions of the crankshaft.

Also, you need to make sure that all your valves are set properly or you could burn some out when the motor starts.
