You won't see a continuous mist at all. These sixes like lots of choke to start.
Timing: if the motor has been worked on then at some point the timing needs to have an initial adjustment. The oints should just be opening when the UDC triangle, just after the ball, is at the pointer.
It shoudl be possible with some effort to turn the engine by hand. I usually do this using the fan and fan belt. However, make sure that the ignition is off!
