Check some of the other car restoration sites. I think you will get some tips there as well. I read on one site where the restorers were using a flat end punch with a back-up behind the joint to make an impression that was very close to what a spot weld looks like.
IMHO, unless you are going for points in a concourse showing, I think this level of restoration is a bit over the top. Just my opinion.
