The 292 is 1.75'' taller. Everything else, size wise is the same. The 292 has offset mounts on the side so you'll have to box the frame. Not sure about the 228 bellhousing but the 292 can take any chevy housing. it depends on what tranny you use. I would change to a more modern tranny than the 49 one you have as the 292 is torque'e.
I am doing all this as you read on my 51. A new 292, T5, 12bolt etc...
