Was I just lucky back in 1956 when I installed a McGurk dual carb manifold with two Stromberg BXOV-2 carburetors on my 1953 235? It ran nearly perfectly when I first fired it up, and after a few minutes of adjusting the carbs with a "synchronizing" gauge, it was perfect. My mother and father were amazed. Along with a Corvette six exhaust manifold, the 1/4 mile e.t. dropped from 19.3 seconds to 17.7. The HP calculators indicate a 29% increase in HP for these times.

This increase in HP is also consistent with the dyno tests by McGurk that were written up by Don Francisco in a 1953 Hot Rod Magazine article: Page 1 Page 2 Page 3 Page 4 (the dyno test data) Page 5 Page 6

Installing one more modern 2-barrel carburetor, such as the 2G that Jerry described, or Tom Langdon's Holley/Webber setups, might be just as good, if not better.

I also had a lot of fun (and earned a small pile of money) tuning and fixing the tri-power setups on the Chevy 348s, Oldsmobile J-2s, etc., while I was working my way through school back in the early sixties.
