Pulling the vacuum signal off the intake manifold will give you advance at idle which isn't required. The ported vacuum signal is blocked by the throttle plate at idle so you get no vacuum or advance.
The different locations result in different advance dynamics. I think this is how it works. Most applications call out ported vacuum for the advance can...I think.
