You mentioned in a garage. Hydrogen gas is released (the little bubbles) as the oxygen molecules are transfered between pieces removing the oxidized iron in the process. Theres a serious potential for causing an explosion if the hydrogen has a spark. Just moving the battery charger clamp can create a spark.
