Digital dial calipers are handy, but they're a little too dependent on feel to suit me for precision measurements. I prefer a dial bore gauge to check rod dimensions like out-of-round, etc. I've got a really nice Starret digital dial caliper I use in my gunsmithing work, but I double-check engine dimensions like cylinders or rod/main bores with an inside mike or a dial bore gage.
