I don't think he has had the brakes to set while he is driving. I think he is worried that he either will have no brakes or that the brakes might set while he is driving. Heavy trucks had spring brakes in the early 60's but I think it was much later when they offered on Chev gas burners. I remember Texas grain haulers with 409s trying to retrofit them but there wasn't enough room with the configuration of the brake spider.
