There was a company in San Francisco in the late 70's called Watson & Meehan that rebuilt lots of diesels, Detroits in particular. Every one got a dyno run as part of the after-buildup testing. One Detroit ran away after an injector rack jammed, and the kid running the dyno test stand panicked and threw a handful of rags into the top of the blower. (No shutdown housing!) Pieces of the blower ended up all over the test room. Fortunately, none of them managed to mangle the operator! (The engine stopped, BTW!)
