on my 38 a distibutor from a 1981 chevy six worked fine. dropped right in. however I scavenged one from a step van that did not fit my 54 so i tried the one from the 38 it also didn't fit properly wouldn't engage the oil pump. the 38 still has the 216 the 54 a 235
