The clutch for the 261 is fairly inexpensive, it's standard GM. You can put the '49 flywheel on the 261 but if you have the standard 9" clutch it is too small to handle the 261's torque.
My 261 came with an 11" clutch setup so I had the 261 flywheel machined to fit the 216 ring gear so I could use my original starter. It cost me $50. I used my '50 216 bellhousing, too.
