Until last summer I had a (leaky) Rochester B on my 235. I would pull out the choke cable, give the accelerator pedal two presses, then crank it and it would run without incident.
I've since changed over to a (non-leaky) Carter YF. I can't get the engine to start. It turns over very well, there is a full bowl of fuel in the filter just upstream of the carb, but it just cranks and cranks without firing up no matter what I do with the accelerator pedal.
If I take off the top of the oil bath and shoot a small squirt of starter fluid then key the engine, it fires up right away and runs fine. This makes me believe that it isn't spark.
After warming up, I can turn off the engine and restart it without incident for the next couple hours or so. All I do is pull out the choke cable, give it a few pumps of the pedal, and press the starter.
My brother-in-law suggested I replace the accelerator pump inside the carb.
Does this sound reasonable? Any other suggestions what the trouble could be?
Thanks in advance.
