I have put 1958 235 motor into my 1952 truck and have the same problem as you exactly described and my intermediate solution is to put some gas from top of the carbuerator and cranks rightup and idles, runs and restarts fine for couples of hr. I am going to watch your thread for my troubleshoot and If I do hit a solution, I will surely update this thread
