Most states used the engine number as the VIN through '55. Check on the boss behind the distributor to see if that's the number on your title. If it isn't your engine may have been replaced without the title being updated or your state did use the serial # as the VIN and Joe's correct about the typo. Either way, if the engine number doesn't match your title you'll have to contact your DMV to get their method of addressing the issue. Each state is a little different on how they handle mis-matched numbers.
