Goggles, a putty knife, a wire brush, and a creeper. Time to get messy.
If you haven't already, get a reprint of the shop manual. Then you'll know where the return springs used to be. You might want to disconnect all the linkage to the pedals and see if they still pivot freely at the toeboard.
