MikeE: I did not adjust the valves during this process.
As Truckernix stated, you may have to look for little signs of progress.
After I got everything put back together and before it actually turned over, I finally noticed a small and faint backfire in the carb. That's when the light came on and then I started to rotate the loose distributor while engaging the starter. I know this may not be correct method and it may be dangerous but it worked for me.
