Before you do anything, chain the rim down so it can't pop off, taking your head with it. I threaded a tow chain through the wheel so it was holding opposite sides before I let the pressure out; good thing, since the rim popped loose when the bead relaxed.

If they're going into storage, why not just leave them as is until you're ready to restore? Space/weight issue?
