A solid-lifter cam has a more gradual acceleration ramp, before the valve actually starts to lift. ideally, the clearance should match this area of gradual lift. It's easy to figure out with a degree wheel and a dial indicator. Otherwise, just try to stay with the cam grinder's clearance specifications. A slightly loose adjustment with a solid lifter system will be a little noisy, but that's better than running out of clearance once the engine warms up.
