The other day I pulled my 54 GMC ½ ton truck out of the garage and drove it for a little while then the truck stopped running on me. I tried cranking it for a while with no success. I pulled a plug to check for spark and found I had none. On a whim I changed the condenser but that did not help. Then I took a voltage tester, that kind that has a ground and a light the will light up if voltage is found and checked for voltage at the ignition coil and found none.
Should I have been able to find current at the coil with the ignition switch on? If I should and I’m not, what should I check next?
On the + side of the ignition coil, it has two wires, one runs to the tack and the other to the distributor. On the – side it has one wire running from the firewall that I have not been able to trace to its source. Could I run a wire from the + side of the battery to the – side of the coil to see if I get voltage on the + side of the coil and if I do, try starting it. My thought is I will be bypassing the wiring to and from the switch to determine if that is where the problem is.
Any advice will be appreciated.
