Its very unlikely that a 12-volt system with an alternator is positive ground. Your coil is wired backwards, and you may have other problems too.

To test the ignition system using the approach I suggested the motor needs to turn, and the foot starter does not have a selinoid to move the starter drive, so it needs to be foot operated.

This is hard to do alone...
