You've probably already figured this out but, when welding pieces of different gauge, your power/speed settings should be set to the thinner gauge metal otherwise you risk burning right thru the thin stuff. You'll obviously not have much penetration on the thicker stuff but when you're talking about clips that hold a lightweight hubcap on, no big deal.
