The block drain you mention at the back, maybe that's the one we (he) cleaned (I watched). It was on the driver's side of the engine, down low & so clogged he had to poke at it to get it draining. When you say left hand side of the block, is that looking towards the radiator? If so, at least I'd be on the correct side
