I would suspect the "three on the tree" transmission went out in 87 with the switch over to the 88-97 body style. Kind of like the Ford (oops I said it) 5 speeds on the switch over to the current F150 design.

I never did drive those well. I only ever had the opportunity twice. Most everything had a 5 speed by then and my old Chev has the non-syncro four speed.
