If you're hung up on a 6, you could go with a more modern drivetrain without going V8. An open driveline with an auto trans with a 230, or 250 six is also a cheap reliable way to go. The six will also be easier to cool, better on gas and the existing steering linkage will work. Plus its still reasonably easy to find a doner.
