I'm no muffler expert, but looking at the cutaway pictures of various Flowmasters on their website, it appears that, given the design of the chambers and deflectors in these mufflers, flow direction is very important to proper operation. These mufflers are supposed improve performance by aiding in exhaust gas scavenging. It looks like backwards flow would be detrimental to performance, and probably sound quality too.
