One of my Motor Magazine service manuals from the mid-1950s gives some dimensions for making a fixture to check the height of the rod dippers, using the oil pan rail of the block as a reference. Another part of the fixture checks the dimension to the top of the dipper troughs in the pan. The main concern is not how deep the dippers go into the trough- - - - -it's the relationship of the top pf the trough to the connecting rod body. They don't want the rods to hit the troughs. Since the dipper/trough intersection is only involved at idle, aiming the squirter tubes is also very important. If a tube is misaligned, the rod will get oiled at idle, but it will burn out the bearing material at cruise speed.
