Might be stripped closest to the bearing. He mentioned putting an extra nut on, where the threads might still be good and help hold the inner nut and bearing in adjustment. So rethreading wouldn't help without welding some additional metal on the stripped part. I'd be hesitant to weld on a spindle. Too much opportunity to mess it up completely.
