You've also got a "crash box" transmission- - - -none of the gears are synchronized, so you're having to move spur gears in and out of mesh. The speed of the gears has to be perfectly matched for every shift to prevent grinding. Lots of double clutching and revving the engine- - - -especially on a downshift.

I think I figured out one of the issues that I was having and it's a big and dumb one on my part. It appears the PTO lever is reverse what I thought it was. I should have recognized it... I hope I can reverse the throw. It looks like the PTO is engaged when it's pulled towards the seat and disengaged when pushed away. The dump up is away and down is close to the seat. So at rest they're opposite. It seams like they should be side by side when down and off.
I'm replacing the master cylinder this weekend. While I'm under there I'll have to asses the linkage.
