Those manual shift 2 speeds usually have two stiff springs around the cable so the shift can be pre-selected. Then momentarily backing off the throttle and/or tapping the clutch pedal to unload the driveline torque lets the rear end shift be made very quickly. It takes a little practice to get the timing down pat.

That's interesting about the springs. I'll take a closer look at mine. It takes some grunt to shift between hi/low right now. I'm planning on disassembling everything and giving it some much needed maintenance to loosen things up.
It's funny you mention the timing. I've been driving standards for more than 35 yrs yet I find myself having to relearn shifting for my 41.
