The retainer is like an oil reservoir, it helps keep the oil inside the bearing. With out it the rollers are open to the axle tube and when driving on an angle or around a turn the oil will drain out from the bearing.
Look at kevinski last pictures. You will see the small ridge the retainer goes against. The next picture you can see the retainer by the rollers.
