Extremely doubtful that a PTO cable would be on a shift lever but it's a correct placement of a 2 speed switch. If it's a wire or a vacuum hose then it is a 2 speed switch. Trace it back, see where it goes. The 292 didn't come out until about 62 but it could have been changed.
