If you're going to stop drill the crack make sure you're at the end of the crack. It's very common for folks to miss the end of the crack. If that happens the crack will continue to propagate. The most reliable method of finding the crack ends is to use liquid penetrant or magnetic particle testing. Welding the crack should remove the need to stop drill IF you weld the whole crack. Start the weld beyond where you think the crack terminates and end it past the visible other end as well.
